Monosaccharides such as glucose are known as reducing sugars. Disaccharides like sucrose (table sugar) are not reducing sugars. Benedict’s solution is only useful for identifying reducing sugars. Why does sucrose provide a positive result when reacting with Benedict’s reagent? (Hint, what happens when we boil the sugar solution in HCl? You may need to look it up online.)
