In the movie “The Day After Tomorrow”, the global thermohaline circulation is stopped
by melting glaciers from Greenland in to the North Atlantic Ocean, causing glacial
conditions in New York City. While fictionalized, the scientific concept is not all wrong.
Explain the concepts related to the thermohaline circulation that might cause something
like this to actually happen (albeit at a much slower pace).
HINT (the hint will not be on
the exam):
how does melting glaciers affect the salinity? What does it do to the density?
Why is this region of the North Atlantic Ocean important in regards to the thermohaline
circulation?
