Portfolio Development

In this assignment, you will begin by posting your curriculum vitae (CV) for your classmates to critique. Your CV is just one of many artifacts that should be included in your portfolio. Receiving feedback from your classmates on your CV can help you identify your areas of strength and areas for improvement. It is also important to understand the difference between a CV and a resume. Potential employers usually request a CV from advanced-degreed nurses. It is also important to note the significance of updating your CV every month. Routine updates allow you to keep an accurate record of all relevant professional accomplishments. This practice will also permit you to submit an updated CV at a moment’s notice when that perfect job becomes available. After you upload your CV to the Discussion Area, please answer the following questions:

• What is the hallmark difference between a CV and a resume?
• Why is one method preferred over another?
• What are the three areas of your CV that you will target for development?

In addition to answering the given questions, list the documents that you have currently placed in your portfolio.

What is the hallmark difference between a CV and a resume?

According to Purdue Global (2020), a resume is a brief summary of experience and education, while a CV provides much more detail. Resumes should be no more than 2 pages, while CVs can be quite extensive without a pagination limit.  Additionally, resume’s should only include the past 10-years of experience, while a CV will be updated frequently and include all historically relevant experience regardless of how far ago it occurred (Sampayo, 2023).  Highly specialized information, such as internships, publications, research projects, and teaching are included on a CV, but not a resume (Sampayo, 2023).

Why is one method preferred over another?

Generally, a resume is a more basic document that is used to highlight education and background. Resumes are used for applying for jobs, while the CV explores professional achievements and is utilized for a career path often times in an academic setting.  The difference is the degree of achievement that one may need to highlight in a higher-level position.  For example a CV would be appropriate when applying for a nurse educator positions and a resume for a bedside nurse position (Purdue Global, 2020).

What are the three areas of your CV that you will target for development?

All the areas of the CV will be a target for me to develop. The CV is a working document that will be updated as new experiences, certifications, or publications are made. I have only previously provided a resume, so this first a CV assignment will be the first (and quite rough) draft.

The places I see the least information is research and publications, dissertation and presentations, and affiliations. I have not published any content nor completed research. Similarly, I have no dissertation nor completed any formal presentations. These areas are blank on my CV.  While I have some professional affiliations, I feel like I should have more professional connections.

Update your portfolio this week because your course instructor will check your progress. If you were a potential employer reviewing your portfolio, what would you identify as strengths and opportunities to improve?

Strengths of my CV are both my professional nursing bedside and teaching experience.  My weaknesses are a lack of published work and research, as well as incomplete doctorate program/dissertation and presentations. These items will be completed throughout the progression of the program and in the future. My goal is to have my final DNP quality improvement project published.

What is the role of reflection in your portfolio development?

Reflection allows the individual to have meaningful thought about the relationship between accomplishments, failures, and goals.  Reflecting on the professional portfolios offers a way to review the milestones of professional work and how progress toward a goal occurred (Beka & Kulinxham, 2021).  The portfolio is a way to keep a record of what was done and how they were demonstrated.  By reflecting on accomplishments compared to goals, the professional can adjust projects and plannings with new timelines to work toward achieving desired accomplishments.
