Initial Post Instructions

Part 1: By Tuesday Night, Share Your Writing as Your Initial Post 

In writing workshops, you will be asked to share, as your first post, a specific piece of writing you are working on at the time, along with some comments or adjustments, depending on the assignment. This week, the piece of writing is your Week 2 Argument Research Essay Proposal. 

1. Please post your writing from Week 2 Argument Research Essay Proposal. 
2. Make an initial post with your proposal attached. In your initial post, please ask at least one question for your reviewer to answer. For example, are you unsure about the strength of your stance in your proposal? Or you might ask your peer for ideas for details to expand on your topic. 
3. Keep in mind that during Week 4, you will submit the introduction, one body and conclusion paragraph draft of your Argument Research Essay to your instructor for grading and feedback. 

*Copying from your classmates’ posts or replies in any way, on any item will be considered plagiarism and will be handled as such. Your instructor may, at any time, check anything you post in workshops for plagiarism by submitting it to Turnitin.  

Peer Review Post Instructions

Part 2: By Saturday Night, Complete One Full Peer Review for a Classmate 

• Choose one classmate who has made their initial post and who does not already have a peer review. Read their question for you in the post, then open their attachment of their Week 2 Argument Research Essay Proposal. 
• Download and complete the Peer Review Worksheet. Complete all tasks with substance (more than just “yes” or “no”). 
• Reply to your classmate’s initial post and attach the Peer Review Worksheet you completed over their writing.  
• Your peer review is worth 50% of your grade for this writing workshop; please do your best! 

Continue the Conversation Post Instructions 

Part 3: By Sunday Night, Continue the Conversation  

In addition to making your own initial post and finishing a peer review for one classmate, you must also continue the conversation by making at least 1 additional post of at least 3 full sentences in length. This post may do any of the following: 

• Respond (kindly) to one of the peer reviews classmates have given you. 
• Respond (kindly) to any questions your classmate may have for you about the peer review you completed. 
• Respond (kindly) to a classmate you did not previously review, with some brief comments about their writing.

Most everyone knows this but you must use a topic that follows the course theme:

Subject:  Course Theme: “Cultural Diversity and Identity”

Announcement: 

The theme for the November 2023 session will be “Cultural Diversity and Identity.”

I encourage you to select a specific aspect of cultural diversity and identity that interests them the most and conduct in-depth research on their chosen topic. This theme allows for rich exploration of how cultural diversity and identity intersect and influence various aspects of society, from language and religion to immigration and popular culture.

*Sources must be no older than 2020.

*Thesis must be arguable (meaning other educated professionals could reasonably oppose your thesis).

Theme: “Cultural Diversity and Identity”

Here are some suggested topics if you are struggling with developing one:

1. Cultural Assimilation vs. Cultural Preservation: Explore the challenges and benefits of cultural assimilation versus cultural preservation in diverse societies.
2. Language and Identity: Analyze how language shapes individual and group identities. Discuss language preservation efforts and their cultural significance.
3. Multiculturalism in Urban Settings: Investigate the effects of multiculturalism in urban environments. Discuss the opportunities and challenges of living in culturally diverse cities.
4. Cultural Appropriation in Popular Culture: Examine instances of cultural appropriation in popular culture and discuss their implications for cultural sensitivity and respect.
5. Cultural Festivals and Celebrations: Investigate the significance of cultural festivals and celebrations in preserving and sharing cultural traditions.
6. Indigenous Cultures and Identity: Investigate the preservation and revitalization of indigenous cultures and the importance of indigenous knowledge systems.
7. Cultural Adaptation in Literature and Film: Examine how literature and film portray the themes of cultural adaptation, identity crisis, and belonging.

Argument Research Essay Proposal 

Please complete all 3 parts of this template using the example proposal template from the assignment instructions as your guide.  Download this file, complete your answers, save and upload to the assignment submission area. 

I. Based on your current favorite choice for a topic/debate within the course theme announcement, answer the following: 

A. State your stance within the debate you chose, without using “I.” (1 sentence) 

 The indigenous culture and knowledge systems must be preserved and revitalized to prevent the loss of their entire culture.

B. Why is your stance a good one for an argument research essay? (at least 3 sentences) 

This is a good stance for an argument research essay because we can see the deterioration of the indigenous culture in our own community. I will cover the importance of preserving this culture and what is being done or proposed to revitalize it. Along with noting my stance on the subject, I will address how revitalization is taking place in communities around the country as well as our own.

C. Who might disagree with your stance and why? (at least 3 sentences) 

I am sure there are some who will oppose my stance, but I will need to research that information. Some people may not openly oppose my stance, but rather may not really have an opinion because it does not affect them. I know from history, that the early white settlers not only opposed any preservation, but tried to erase the Native culture completely,

D. Who do you imagine your audience will be? (at least 2 sentences) 

I think that it is possible that my audience could include school boards, public associations, and elected officials. People may not realize that the indigenous culture and all of its knowledge systems are very close to becoming nonexistent, and they may not know that they could play a vital role in revitalization.

II. In a full paragraph of 7-9 sentences, and without performing any research, please note what you already understand about the debate and what you do not already understand about the debate: 

My understanding of indigenous culture and the knowledge systems is based on some personal experiences and from listening closely to the subject on news sources. First of all, preserving any culture is important for many reasons. If traditions and stories are not preserved and passed down to the newer generations, the entire history of the culture, and the culture itself, is in danger of being forgotten. The indigenous peoples have used storytelling, dances, festivals, and ceremonies to teach the history of the people. Early settlers tried several ways to prevent these festivals and ceremonies. Indigenous cultures did not write important events and history down on paper as their white counterparts did . The storytelling, often through dance, was an often used way to convey the history and how they would go forth toward the future.

III. Shortly, you will begin scholarly research in the library. This research will help you find opposing viewpoints (sources that disagree with you) and supporting viewpoints (sources that agree with you), as well as information to fill in missing gaps in knowledge you may have. With all three of these goals in mind, please list five possible search phrases you might use when you begin searching in the library.
