After completing this week’s reading assignment (Chapters 11, 12 & 13), select a Bioethical issue (for example, mandatory DNA fingerprinting, gene therapy trials etc.) and research it further. Find a reliable, useful website that discusses how science interacts with our daily lives. No duplicate websites are permitted. [NOTE: Neither open resources nor open blogs can be used as sources of information.] This is not an opinion assignment; therefore information presented about the Bioethical Issue must be supported by reliable academic resources (facts supported by research).

Selection of Organ Donation

A bioethical issue is defined as the ethics surrounding philosophical, social, and legal issues arising in medicine and life sciences. The major concern is human life and well-being and its relation to nonhuman biological environments. In simple words, issues involve the beginning and end of human life. A highly critical topic in bioethical issues is organ transplantation. The first two steps of organ transplantation are gaining access to a transplant center, as well as then needing to be specifically selected for the transplant. The primary issue is organ donation has a variety of ethic-laden issues from invalidation of individual rights to criteria of donation. Criteria of donation is a problem due to potential recipients not being selected due to nationality, age, mental impairment, criminal history, or even lack of access to organs. Ethics come into play when asked if there is any fair way to distribute organs with scarce resources. What I found particularly helpful is understanding the environment of organ donation and what details are considered on both the medical side and the patient side.
