Your book talks of the “differential diagnosis of Charlie Sheen” and suggests difficulty in understanding exactly what is going on with his behavior. Should mental health professionals be concerned from a psychological perspective in trying to understand his behavior? For this discussion board, find someone in the pop media whose behavior might be difficult to explain and/or diagnose.
In your response provide the following:
- Name the person and describe what they did that made you wonder about their behavior.
- Discuss your instinct as to how to best explain this person’s behavior. Is there a problem, as described in the Charlie Sheen example, or does the person just exhibit “odd” behavior?
- Try your best to each find a different person, so read the responses before you answer.
In thinking about the DSM-5 as the gold standard resource for mental health diagnostics, consider its strengths and weaknesses. After reviewing this week’s readings and resources (as well as relevant outside sources you choose) describe two strengths of the DSM-5 and two areas for improvement in the DSM-5 that would best serve the mental health population.
